Is Technology Holding Back Your Luxury Kitchen?

How to Get Technology and Design Working Together in Your Luxury Home

A luxury kitchen starts with the finishes: honed stone, custom cabinetry, and an island built for gathering. The technology tends to arrive late, and the seams show. A bank of switches interrupts the backsplash, and speaker grilles land wherever the ceiling has room.

Planning the technology alongside the cabinetry avoids the need for costly or distracting compromises. Lights can be layered to warm the stone at night, shades can tame the glare when a Palm Beach afternoon sun is at its brightness, and keypads can be matched to fit the decor.

Keep reading to see how each piece works and what to settle while the plans are still open.

Lighting Scenes That Follow How You Use the Kitchen

A kitchen performs several tasks in a day. A single light setting won’t cover them all. Prep work at the counters needs bright, even light. Dinner with guests calls for something softer. A midnight glass of water needs almost none. A switch that only offers on and off doesn’t provide that kind of flexibility.

With Lutron lighting control, the island pendants, recessed fixtures, and under-cabinet LEDs all get grouped into custom scenes. A Cook scene brings the counters and island to full brightness. Entertain dims the recessed lights and leaves the pendants and under-cabinet glow on. Clean-Up brings all the lights to full brightness. Activate each scene from clearly labeled buttons on custom keypads on the wall.

Lutron Ketra fixtures add one more option. They shift white light from warm to cool through the day, so stone and cabinetry look their best as the Florida sun moves across the room.

Hidden Audio Keeps the Design Intact

Stone counters and tile floors reflect sound, so speaker placement matters more in a kitchen than in a carpeted living room. Hidden audio keeps the hardware out of sight. Careful placement keeps the sound clear. In-ceiling speakers sit flush with a grille painted to match, and plaster-in speakers disappear entirely.

Speaker count and placement matter, too. Two or more speakers spread across the ceiling give even sound from the range to the island, so you can keep the volume low enough to talk over and still hear the music when the hood is running. Putting the kitchen on its own audio zone means you can set its level separately from the family room next door, and turn it down for a conversation at the island without touching anything else.

Control4 lets you handle the music from your control device of choice. Play a playlist in the kitchen alone, or share it with the living room or patio.

Keypads and Shades Match Your Finishes

The wall of switches is often the first thing that dates a kitchen. Replace it with an engraved keypad with buttons named for your go-to scenes. Choose a finish that coordinates with your cabinet hardware or wall colors. Lutron’s Palladiom keypad comes in metals like satin brass and satin nickel, as well as glass and a range of colors. A kitchen keypad usually needs only four or five buttons, labeled in plain words that a guest can read at a glance.

Motorized Lutron shades belong in the kitchen, too. West-facing windows over the sink bring glare to the counters by late afternoon. Shades that lower on a schedule keep the room comfortable without anyone needing to reach for a cord.

Palladiom shades have polished aluminum brackets and hem bars that can coordinate with the keypad. A center bracket holds two shades side by side with a one-inch light gap, which suits a pair of windows over the sink. Sivoia QS offers more fabrics and styles, including Roman shades and drapery. Triathlon Select is a simpler battery-powered option in neutral fabrics.

On west-facing glass, a tighter weave blocks more glare but narrows the view, while an open weave keeps the view and lets in more light. Check samples against the window in late-afternoon sun.
