YOUR ROOMBA MIGHT BE MAPPING YOUR HOUSE
It is no surprise that the Roomba collects data as it cleans your house while you are out doing better things or simply watching television. It has to collect data because it needs to identify the locations of your walls and funiture to avoid crashing into them. But they now released that the Roomba creates a map of your home which they could possibly share with Apple, Google or any other platform.
There were some rumours that the iRobot would sell the data but that has recently been disputed. The latest we have heard was that they were hoping on sharing the maps for free with customers consent to enhance home automation.
Nonetheless, it raises the question about home automation and security. But lets see it as a positive thing! It may seriously improve overall home automation. An iRobot spokesman said in a written response: "In order to 'do the right thing' when you say 'turn on the lights,' the room must know what lights it has to turn on. Same thing for music, TV, heat, blinds, the stove, coffee machines, fans, gaming consoles, smart picture frames or robot pets."
So even though it can be seen as a positive thing for the overal home automation experience, we are of the opinion that it should only be shared with customer consensus and that there should be a strong focus on protecting this information.
