WHAT YOUR KIDS SHOULD KNOW
We all want to make sure our home and loved ones are safe. There are multiple ways to secure your house, including cameras and alarms. But it is equally as important to go over how to use them, in case you stay out later than expected or something else happens. Here are a couple tips you should consider!
Security System
Smart home security systems can monitor your home 24/7. If anything happens, an alert will be send to a central location, the police or your phone. Take a moment to sit down with your family and go over how to arm and disarm the security system. You should establish rules for when this is supposed to happen. Warn them to keep the code a secret and if shared to tell you so you can change it. You should consider letting the alarm ring once or twice so they know what it sounds like (most alarms are very loud and this can trigger anxiety or a shock reaction).
Window and Doors
Statistics say that about a third of burglaries are through unsecured entry. Make a regimen your kids can follow every time they are home alone or leave the home. Make sure they understand this is for your safety and theft.
Emergency Practice
Forewarned is forearmed. If you know about something beforehand, you can prepare for it. You should handle safety in the same way. Make sure everyone knows the escape route in case of a fire. Make sure your kids know where to gather when evacuation is necessary. Same goes for a break-in. Make arrangements that you kids will go to a neighbors house and know where to hide indoors. Make sure they have some sort of alarm protocol, so they know to call 911 and trip the security alarm system if safe (again, it is important that they know how to work the system). Don't make it scary, make it fun. Kids learn best when they are having fun. This is a great way to bond with the family and make sure they know what to do in case of an emergency.
